Set beneath a vibrant pink Sydney sky, "Strava Before Sandwiches" playfully captures the lunchtime ritual of the corporate runner. Against the backdrop of the Botanical Gardens, the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and a passing Qantas plane, branded athletes stride purposefully through the park, watches tracking every kilometre and every hard-earned segment. From performance gear to running sunglasses, the scene is packed with familiar details that celebrate—and gently poke fun at—the culture of squeezing a workout into the workday.
Part of the Tongue in Cheek series, the painting rewards closer inspection with a few mischievous moments: an ibis making off with an unsuspecting lunch, a discarded banana skin by a park bench, and a Sydney Striders runner among the crowd. Bright, humorous and distinctly Sydney, this work is a light-hearted snapshot of modern city life, where logging the run sometimes seems just as important as eating the sandwich.
